Our evaluation criteria

Nine points we look at for every guest house in this ranking – transparent and the same for all.

Data-based · Experiences

Guest reviews

The overall score comes from reviewfinder.org and pools several review platforms. We always look at the score together with the number of reviews.

01

Data-based · Count and sources

Reliability of the reviews

A handful of reviews is easily skewed. We include places with ten or more reviews and show for every entry how many sources the score comes from.

02

Offer · What you book

Type of stay

Rooms with breakfast, self-catering cottages or a whole house: we note clearly what each place offers and who it suits – couples, families or groups.

03

Stay · Rooms

Comfort and cleanliness

Beds, bathrooms, heating for cold winter nights and how clean a place is kept: we check what guests report about it in their reviews.

04

Location · Surroundings

Setting and views

Orchards, vineyards, dams and mountains: the setting is a large part of a stay in the Elgin Valley, and so is how quiet it is.

05

Practical · Extras

Facilities

A pool for summer, a fireplace for winter, a braai area, Wi-Fi and safe parking: the facilities decide how much a place offers beyond a bed.

06

Service · Welcome

Hosts and service

A personal welcome, quick answers before arrival and good tips for the valley come up again and again in the best reviews.

07

Practical · Access

Getting there

How far is it from Cape Town and the N2, how good is the road, and how easy is the place to find? This matters most on arrival after dark.

08

Editorial · Maintenance

Up to date

We review the order twice a year and remove entries whose details are no longer correct or whose website can no longer be reached.

Note: The assessment is an editorial judgement based on publicly available information and the reviews pooled at reviewfinder.org. It does not replace your own research before booking.
