The Elgin Valley is a high-lying apple and wine valley about 70 km southeast of Cape Town, roughly an hour's drive along the N2 over Sir Lowry's Pass. Most visitors come for tastings at the more than 20 wine estates, the weekend Elgin Railway Market, the Cape Canopy zipline and a large network of mountain-bike trails.
Because the valley is so close to the city, it works well as a day trip. Stay a night or two and you can add a long lunch on a wine farm and a slower drive home along the coast.
Where is the Elgin Valley?
Elgin lies in the Overberg, just over the Hottentots Holland Mountains from Somerset West. Its commercial centre is Grabouw, about 65 km from Cape Town on the N2. Wines of Elgin describes the area as the coolest wine region in South Africa, with vineyards at 250 to 500 metres above sea level.
Apples came first, though. Wines of South Africa notes that Elgin used to be known as South Africa's apple orchard, and fruit orchards still cover more than 6,500 hectares. The valley is also part of the Kogelberg Biosphere Reserve, which UNESCO registered in 1998 as South Africa's first biosphere reserve.
What is there to do in the Elgin Valley?
Wine tasting on the Elgin wine route
Elgin's reputation rests on cool-climate Chardonnay, Pinot Noir and Sauvignon Blanc. Tasting rooms keep fairly short hours, and some are closed early in the week or open only on weekday mornings and Saturdays. Iona, for example, pours Monday to Friday from 10:00 to 16:00 and on Saturdays until 14:00. Two or three estates make a relaxed day, and it pays to check times before you set off.
For a route that mixes wine with nature, follow the Green Mountain Eco Route. It's billed as the world's first biodiversity wine route and links farms around the Groenlandberg between Bot River, Elgin, Grabouw, Houw Hoek and Villiersdorp.
Elgin Railway Market
Set in an old apple warehouse, the Elgin Railway Market mixes steampunk and art deco with food stalls selling everything from curries and poke bowls to Neapolitan pizza and ribs. The full market runs on Saturdays and Sundays from 09:00 to 16:00. On Wednesday and Friday evenings, a smaller selection of food vendors and a bar open from 16:00 to 20:30 (as of November 2026).
How long is the train ride from Cape Town to Elgin?
Expect about three and a half hours each way on the vintage train, with two hours at the market in between, according to Cape Town Etc. It leaves Cape Town at 08:05 on weekends and covers a 160 km round trip, and adult tickets cost R799 (as of November 2026). The operator traded as Ceres Rail Company until 1 September 2026 and is now Cape Rail Company, so older guides still use the old name.
Don't count on steam. The market says it aims to include a steam locomotive, but diesel locomotives are part of every trip.
Cape Canopy Tour zipline
On the Cape Canopy Tour, eleven zipline slides and a suspension bridge cross a gorge with a double waterfall in the Hottentots Holland Nature Reserve near Grabouw. The longest slide runs 320 metres, and the guided tour takes around four and a half hours. Children can join from the age of five.
Mountain biking and hiking
Oak Valley is known for its groomed single track. A day permit costs R80 for adults and R40 for children under 12, you buy it online, and the trails are open every day during daylight hours (as of November 2026). If you plan to ride several networks, the Winelands Trails regional permit covers the Grabouw Forest Trails, Oak Valley and Fruitways Farm, among others. The 2026 adult membership costs R1,410 and runs until 31 January 2027.
Hikers head into the Hottentots Holland Nature Reserve, which covers 70,000 hectares from Elgin to beyond Villiersdorp. The Boland Hiking Trail runs through it, and the entrance is at Nuweberg on Viljoen's Pass between Grabouw and Villiersdorp.
Farm stalls and apple picking
Peregrine Farm Stall at the Grabouw turn-off has been trading since 1964 and is best known for its pies and in-house bakery. A little further along the N2, Houw Hoek Farm Stall is another bakery stop with a long history. Some farms open their orchards for picking in late summer and autumn; in 2025, Cheverells Farm offered picking days from February to May.
Restaurants in the Elgin Valley
Most places to eat are on wine farms and keep daytime hours, so plan around lunch rather than dinner. At Paul ClĂĽver, chef Bertus Basson runs Bloem, with small plates inside and a pizza garden outside.
| Where | What to expect | Opening times |
|---|---|---|
| Bloem at Paul Clüver | Small plates, family-friendly, pizza garden | Tue–Sun, breakfast from 08:00, lunch 12:00–14:30 |
| Canvas Café at South Hill | Country breakfasts, platters and tapas next to an art gallery | Wed–Sun, 08:00–16:00 |
| Elgin Vintners | Tasting room with a wood-fired pizza oven | Wed–Sun, 10:00–16:00 |
| Highlands Road | Café platters on decks by the dam, book 48 hours ahead on weekdays | Wed–Sun, 10:00–16:00 |
| Almenkerk | Cheese and charcuterie platters in the tasting room | Tue–Sat, 10:00–16:00 |
| Hickville Smokehouse | Smokehouse on the N2, just past Paul Clüver | Wed–Fri 10:00–16:00, Sat–Sun 09:00–17:00 |
| Peregrine Farm Stall | Pies, bakery and café at the Grabouw turn-off | Mon–Thu 07:30–17:00, Fri–Sun 07:30–18:00 |
Opening times as of November 2026, taken from the venues' websites: South Hill, Elgin Vintners, Highlands Road, Almenkerk, Hickville, Peregrine. Check before you go, especially around public holidays.
If you're working from an older guide, two changes matter. Oak Valley's restaurant partnership with The Table came to an end in 2026, and The Barn at Old Mac Daddy is closed to walk-in diners for most of the year, opening only from 11 December to 11 January.
Getting to the Elgin Valley from Cape Town
Take the N2 east past Somerset West and climb Sir Lowry's Pass, which tops out at 460 metres with wide views over False Bay. On the far side, you reach the Elgin plateau and Grabouw. From Cape Town International Airport it's around 55 km and 50 minutes, according to the directions from Elgin Estate Lodge, which also puts Stellenbosch about 40 minutes and Hermanus about 45 minutes away.
Visitors from the UK can drive on a UK photocard licence for up to 12 months. With an older paper licence, you'll need a 1968 international driving permit (FCDO advice as of November 2026).
Plan to arrive before dark. The UK Foreign Office reports an increase in targeted attacks on roads to and from Cape Town airport. It advises staying on the N2 and the airport approach road, keeping windows closed and valuables in the boot, and not dropping off a hire car at night. If you land in the evening, spending the first night in Cape Town is the easier option.
On the way home, consider the coast. The R44 between Kleinmond and Gordon's Bay is a very scenic ocean drive, ending with the stretch known as Clarence Drive. Clarence Drive has been closed or reduced to stop-go traffic several times after storm damage, including during repairs in 2025, so check road conditions before you set off.
Best time to visit the Elgin Valley
Spring, from September to November, is when the orchards and gardens are at their most beautiful. Apple blossom can start as early as late August and lasts into October. Over the last weekend of October and the first of November, the Elgin Open Gardens open private gardens to visitors; 2026 marks the event's 26th year.
Summer brings evening concerts to the Paul ClĂĽver Amphitheatre, set in the forest on the wine estate. The 2025/26 season ran from January to March, and dates for the next season had not been published by November 2026. Harvest festivals usually take place around April, according to South African Tourism.
Where to stay in the Elgin Valley
Accommodation in the Elgin Valley is mostly small-scale. Getaway's roundup of 13 places to stay, published in 2019, is almost entirely farm cottages and guest houses, plus a few glamping sites. The biggest exception is the Houw Hoek Hotel on the N2 between Grabouw and Bot River, one of the oldest licensed hotels in the country, with a ground floor dating from 1779.
